Day One-hundred-and-forty-five: Running out of time

Since I am "running out of time," I did what I normally do in those situations, I procrastinate. This means that I watched a lot of football rather than get any of my real work done. I was so lazy today that I had to turn on the furnace to compensate for my lack of activity.

Not that I only watched TV but the amount I watched didn't allow me to make a lot of progress. I did get a too wordy draft of a flyer I hope to post on my Den of Inequities tour. As substantially the only thing I got partly done today, I should post it. I did already send it by email to a few of my regular readers. Actually, by using my "family" distribution list, it may have made it to more readers than posting it here would show it to. Ah, obscurity in my Life after Layoff.

By posting it here, I'm doing something I have avoided thus far, directly posting my name. It wouldn't have been all that difficult for anyone to figure it out as several of my posted links show my name, but this is yet another line erosion. But even posting my name doesn't mean that I will be posting other peoples' names, even as my relationship descriptions get a little awkward at times. (I haven't had anyone who might be reading this tell me to go ahead and use their name.)

And now for the flyer draft:

As if cancer patients didn’t have enough to deal with, many cancers and cancer treatments cause chronic lymphedema. Many people, including some in the medical profession will tell you that there is no effective treatment. But, THERE IS!

The swelling of lymphedema can also be life threatening due to increased susceptibility to infections. However, it most often causes severe mobility issues as swelling around joints restrict their motion or the mass of the fluid that builds up cannot be easily moved with overstrained muscles. Then there is the reduced circulation that can cause other problems and pain, which is a problem on its own.

The most effective treatment, in conjunction manual lymph drainage massage therapy, is garments specifically designed for treating lymphedema and custom fitted for the sufferer. Unfortunately as many states do not recognize these garments as medical devices, many insurance companies do not cover them.

As a memorial to Marilyn Westbrook, who passed away from cancer December 23, 2007, the Marilyn Westbrook Garment Fund has been established. She also suffered from lymphedema as a byproduct of her cancer. It was so bad in her left leg that she had become bedridden. The day after she got her garment from Don Kellogg of Telesto Medtech, (Visit http://www.telesto-medtech.com/ for more specific information about their garments.); she was back up and moving around the house. What’s even better, she was able to participate in her daughter’s wedding. Read more about this story at http://www.lymphnet.org/patients/westbrookFund.htm.

The National Lymphedema Network, a 501(c)(3) organization http://www.lymphnet.org/, was established to educate the medical profession and patients that there were treatment options on dealing with lymphedema. It has expanded its charter to help provide garments to people suffering from lymphedema who could not otherwise afford them.

If the Marilyn Westbrook Garment Fund had to subsist on my money alone, the “memory” would be far too short and the help far too little. Please join me in relieving the suffering of others by donating to the fund. Help give the gift of “living” to those who need to make every moment count. Even those who are cured of their cancer cannot truly live, if they have been left with the debilitating effects of lymphedema.

Thank you,

Doyle Westbrook

Day Thirty-six: Listening for good reading

When I woke up this morning at close to my normal 6:00 AM time, I realized that I'm really enjoying not working, at least not working for someone else. The only problem is that so far I haven't found a way to get money for it. I am revising downward the amount of money I need. Less is truly more--time, in this Life after Layoff.

My wife really got into audio books in the last few years, one of the reasons I got her an iPod with the inscription: "Marilyn, the JOY of my life." As I reported on my long ride down to Pasadena, I was listening to that iPod and an audio book that she recommended to me, The Secret. Well, I finally finished that particular listening today in my driving around to buy things.

And buy things I did. In fact, I've been buying the whole month of August, so far. I'm always buying food, but when I made the chocolate cupcakes, I discovered that my Hershey's Dutch Processed Special Dark cocoa was running so low that I probably wouldn't have enough to make another batch. The three grocery stores I've stopped in so far haven't had any "Dutch Processed" cocoa.

Today though, I have spent the most money in one day since I bought the shed. I won't say how much I spent, but what I spent it on is as follows:

A new suit and alterations on the two suits that are now too large for me.
A new blue blazer and a couple of shirts and ties.
A soap dish so I don't have to use the soap out of travel case.
A set of those push up grips. (Yes, I was intrigued by the television ads but got them at Bed Bath and Beyond with a 20% discount.)

Four hundred business cards for handing out on the Marilyn Westbrook Fund.

And a photographic print cartridge to print quality pictures of Marilyn for a poster I need to make for the International NLN Conference coming up the end of August. (The conference is the reason I bought the suit and blazer. The alterations were really for my son's wedding on September 13th.)

I've scanned more slides today but the scanner locked up when I tried to delete the 72 I had just moved to my hard drive. Then it was time for a meal. I'm not trying to be so skimpy on the calories any more but do want to continue keeping the fat calorie percentage at 10%. The day before I decided to undertake this renewed body fuel consciousness, I bought a couple containers of hummus. The commercial hummus has a tremendous amount of fat content. Beyond that, the serving size is just two tablespoons, hardly enough to spread on one half of a 300 calorie bagel.

Day Eighteen: Demolition day

Just as a few days ago I had a successful day of shredding and tossing, today consisted of demolition. It was fun to wield a crowbar and strip off redwood 2x4's from an arbor that inconveniently is where my new shed needs to go.

What with more book sorting in the morning, more strawberries for lunch, this time with chocolate, and finding tools to do the demolition, including the ladder, I didn't get to the demolition until late in the afternoon. So, I only got the top boards off.

I also got a call from the founder of the charity that created the memorial fund, Marilyn Westbrook Garment Fund, for my wife. I have a couple of assignments to prepare for the conference where I will be staffing a booth for her fund. The expected dress is jacket and tie. After losing weight and wearing business casual for years for work, my selection of jackets and ties are, well, limited. Good thing I was going to go shopping and altering for my son's wedding coming up two weeks after the conference.

I still have books all over my bedroom floor. I still have the big boards to demo on the arbor. I still have a dirty truck with a bed full of shed. But, I had strawberries and chocolate. Great desserts give meaning to Life after Layoff.
