Day One-hundred-and-eighty-eight: Cold in Columbus

Well, actually it is above freezing at 9:00 PM in Columbus. However, I have a head cold. If I didn't get it from my oldest sister, still younger than me except in Wii, I got it from her youngest daughter. Now I know that the Rhino virus is with us all the time and I probably got it by not getting enough rest. To this end as soon as I finish this entry I will be drinking a hot toddy and heading to bed.

I'm looking forward to getting the best night's sleep I've had in my Life after Layoff. I will try and sit up more in bed using multiple pillows and make sure I keep my forehead warm. If this doesn't clear it up tonight, I will get some symptom medicine so I can head out of here on time.

I want to make sure I have enough travel time built in so I can get back before my plants die after the watering I arranged stops. I also want to use my new toilet and see the work in person rather than by picture. (This anticipation is all part of my New Year's Resolution which I reported in yesterday's entry.)

I've enjoyed my visiting but with the Columbus crowd working, my sister-in-law is planning on getting up at 5:30 AM tomorrow, the visiting can quickly become an imposition, keeping them and me up way too late. Besides, I don't want to deplete their immune systems and give them an extra dose of virus on the side.

Tomorrow is a final get together, but it is more for my daughter and her husband. Many of the spouses of relatives won't be there due to The Ohio State University playing Texas. If I don't go, it will be because my cold will make everyone miserable not because I would prefer to watch my university win a football game. (Besides, I know how likely it really is that they will win. I believe!)

On Tuesday, I hope to stop in and visit my cousin in Springfield as well as make a healthy start on my trip home. (The hope is due to the status of my cold. I will call him tomorrow to let him know.)

Day One-hundred-and-seventy-eight: Christmas Day

Back to winging it again. I kind of like writing my thoughts out with pen and paper before I type them into this blog but it does make for a lot of typing when I finally get computer access. Like today, it happens in the really off hours or I am thought to be an anti-social person like the hermit I really am. I'm living counter to type most of the time because, even though I enjoy some time alone, I have had a year of too much of it.

Today was a day of too: too much food, too many gifts, too little exercise, ...

Once again the presents were most appropriate. I'm particularly looking forward to hanging the hummingbird feeder I got as one of them. Another was an Ohio State "hoodie." (Here I am an Ohio State alumnus and other than my diploma, which I can't find, I didn't have anything with Ohio State on it.) My daughter and her husband gave me a couple books that are appropriate in more than one way: I like to read and these are all about what I want to do. I can't wait! Then there were cold weather clothes and emergency cold weather supplies, which I will be carrying with me on the rest of my travels.

My son-in-law has been sick all day with what he at first thought was food poisoning. We are now thinking it is stomach flu. I feel badly that he is feeling badly but can't help but hope that it stops with him. Maybe it is a variety that was covered in my flu shot. My brother-in-law was up until 3:00 AM or so last night and is still up tonight, along with his wife. It would be the pits if we were to visit illness on them as well as they have treated us. Before my Life after Layoff, one of my favorite sayings was: "No good deed goes unpunished."

Day Twelve: On the Water

I could really tell that I was 300 miles further north and that Summer Solstice wasn't that long ago. This is a long winded way to say that the dawn and the light that wakes me up came earlier. Even being on the north side of the house didn't help.

In my college days I had gotten used to sleeping in a near sensory deprivation chamber with my interior dorm room in the Ohio State Stadium Scholarship dorm. But I have always found it difficult to sleep in the light. Of course, the sounds of roosters coming through the screened but open door may also have had something to do with it. They did not belong to my hosts.

While at the time I did not have access to the Internet and this blog, I did use the time to prepare some notes so I could make this entry later, as I am now doing.

The big activity of the day was rowing (for me) and paddling (for others) in a rowboat and canoe that my son-in-law's father had made. They were excellent crafts. It was a lot of fun. While I wasn't used to rowing and got a couple blisters for my presumption, they didn't break; I didn't get sore; and in no way was there any discomfort to diminish the fun.

After dinner, we appropriately played the card game "Up and Down the River." I had played it before but never so well. Well, never so lucky. I even had a good chance to win the first game but had to bid zero and only got ten points each in the final two hands while my host bid and made two and one; beating me by three points. But my luck wasn't universal. Earlier in the day I was skunked by daughter in cribbage. I guess to truly enjoy the good luck of this Life after Layoff, I'll have to accept a little bad luck in cards. It is well worth it.
